The final phase of TDOT's Improving 66 project was award in February 2012 to Simpson Construction Company. This phase includes widening and improving the roadway between Boyds Creek Highway and Douglas Dam Road, including lane additions to the north and south bound bridges over the French Broad River.
Blalock Ready Mix is supplying ready mix concrete and concrete pumping services for this phase of the project. Currently, Simpson has completed the new northbound lanes of the bridge and is currently constructing piers in the river for new southbound lanes. This challenging location requires Blalock Ready Mix pumps to reach out to pipe systems mounted to barges in the river. Concrete is then pumped through the boom and pipe system into coffer dams for seals and footings. Crews must also coordinate pours with the power generation schedule for Douglas Dam to ensure that the barges and pipe system are not disturbed by the swift current from the dam turbines.
Additionally, crews from Charles Blalock and Sons are using slipform paving equipment to place curb, gutter, and sidewalks throughout the project. Blalock crews will also provide also paving in the new lanes constructed by Simpson crews.
